Every business owner has a story to tell... here's my Zero Milestone story.
I just started as an outside sales rep for a minor league baseball team in Texas. I was meeting prospects with my senior supervisor to sell corporate game tickets.
About halfway through one particular meeting with a business owner, my well-memorized sales pitch was greeted with lackluster enthusiasm from him and apprehensive looks from his employees.
“I have tickets to every team in town but I’m losing employees every day. Will this really help my business?” the owner asked me solemnly.
I did the unexpected
I tried several ways to overcome his objection but I eventually figured out he was actually asking for help running his company. He was hemorrhaging money to every sports team in town and employee benefits salesman but couldn’t keep up with his payroll, much less retain employees.
To the horror of my senior, I advised the owner to cut his costs until he can pay his employees. I actually wanted to help him turn his business around instead of just collecting a commission.
Even though I didn’t get the sale, I had peace of mind in knowing I had done the right thing. That experience helped me discover my passion to help businesses grow and become successful.
